ELEVATING SOUNDSCAPES FOR FILM, STAGE, AND STUDIO

Nico Abondolo is one of those rare artists who defies classification. A veteran of over 1,500 film scores, an established performer on the stage, and an award-winning composer, Nico’s reputation as one of the most sought-after double bassists and composers in Hollywood and beyond rests on a foundation of both excellence and versatility. Over the course of a decades-long career, Nico has collaborated with some of Hollywood’s most iconic composers, including John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Thomas Newman, Alan Silvestri, Christophe Beck, Brian Tyler, and Harry Gregson-Williams. Both his playing and his ideas feature on numerous award-winning scores, including major films like Top Gun: Maverick, Pirates of the Caribbean, 12 Years a Slave, and Hillbilly Elegy. The sound textures he contributed to the Academy Award-nominated score for Dunkirk pushed the boundaries of the double bass and helped bring the film to life. Nico is equally at home on the classical stage. He made his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the age of 14. In 1983 he became the first double bassist to win the International Competition in Geneva, Switzerland. He has served as principal double bassist for such prestigious ensembles as the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the New Century Chamber Orchestra and has appeared frequently with the La Jolla SummerFest and the St. Barth Festival. Collaboration is the cornerstone of Nico’s professional life. During his formative years at The Juilliard School Nico developed a deep appreciation for creative partnerships that has since led him to join forces with a diverse group of filmmakers, choreographers, and musicians worldwide. His first solo film score for the PBS documentary Half the Sky won the 2013 Film Independent Spirit Award, cementing his status as a sought-after composer for the screen.

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF PERFORMERS

TESTIMONIALS

"I have been fortunate enough to study with Nico for 3 summers at Music Academy of the West and to take additional lessons with him while I lived in Los Angeles. He has been incredibly influential to me as a musician and person and I wouldn't be where I am today without him. Nico has the distinctive ability to see how each person learns best and he is able to tailor his teaching accordingly. Nico helped me become confident in my playing, he provided unique practice techniques that I still use to this day, and he allowed space for me to access my own musicality and individual sound."

"Studying with Nico has been an extraordinary journey. He not only helped me build technical mastery on the double bass, but also taught me how to adapt seamlessly to diverse acoustic environments and thrive under high-pressure conditions. Nico's unique, refreshing musical identity and deep understanding of storytelling through music inspired me to push the boundaries of my own creativity. Whether you're a student seeking to elevate your craft or a director looking for a composer who can bring authentic, evocative depth to your project, Nico's expertise is simply unparalleled."

- Nick Myers, Principal Double Bass Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra

"Throughout my career as a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Principal Bass of the Minnesota Orchestra, faculty member at The Colburn School, Indiana University, Northwestern University, and the University of Minnesota, I have had the good fortune of observing and interacting many times with the leading double bass teachers of North America.
Throughout that time, I have never witnessed a double bass teacher as creative and inspiring as what Nico Abondolo offers. What he gives to his students and colleagues is very rare. His ability to help students become the full-sized expressive artists they aspire to is legendary. For decades, Nico has been universally regarded as one of the most important elements in the fabric of American double bass teaching.

His students are deeply devoted to him while continually expressing their gratitude for having had the opportunity to study with him. For many years, he has been held in the highest esteem by his teaching peers throughout North America and abroad.""
